Work, summer and my new room!

I know I haven’t posted in a while and I feel like it’s time for a little life update, because some exciting stuff has happened and even more is about to happen! My gap year is officially almost coming to an end, since I’m starting my masters in Amsterdam in September. I’m so glad to let you know that I’ve finally found the perfect room, which I’ll tell you all about later in this post. But first let me talk about what I’ve been up to these past few weeks.

As you might know I’ve been working as a cleaner at a holiday park. Not my dream job as you can imagine, but it was fun for a little while. I had lovely colleagues, which made all the endless hours of cleaning toilets so much more bearable. However, I can’t say that I’m sad that I had my last day on Friday. Of course I’ll have to get another job eventually, but for now I can completely focus on starting my life in Amsterdam and enjoying the last bit of summer.

I didn’t really go on a big vacation this summer, because let’s be real I’ve been vacationing more than enough this year. My parents did wanna go on a little trip though, just to get away from home for a little bit. Thankfully they let me tag along, because you’re never too old to go on vacation with your parents right?! We went on a little road trip through Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany and we honestly had a blast. Not everything went as smoothly as planned though. On our first night in Antwerp the bed bugs in my bed has a little party, which resulted in me having over a 100 itching bites all over me for the rest of the week. It might sound stupid, but I’ve never even though about this happening in a reasonably good hotel in Belgium. I mean I totally expected to get bitten by bed bugs in one of the crappy hostels I stayed in in Asia or Australia, but I guess this shows these nasty insects can show up anywhere! I think I’ll be checking my bed in every hotel, hostel or guesthouse I stay in from now on. And just so you know, we checked everything thoroughly and washed all our clothes on a high temperature and stuff to make sure we didn’t take them home. Even with the little bed bug debacle our trip was great though! We visited some amazing cities, a lot of charming villages and saw some pretty nature. With the weather being so hot and dry it honestly felt like we were in some Mediterranean country instead of only a few hours from home. Below I’ve included some of my favourite pictures from the trip.

So, the past few weeks I’ve been working, chilling at home and vacationing with my parents, but besides that I’ve also been very busy trying to find a great room in Amsterdam. I’ve viewed quite a few rooms and after weeks of looking I’ve now officially signed my contract for a room right in the center. It might not have everything I was dreaming of, but it just felt very good when I visited and I thing at the end of the day that’s the most important thing. The room is on the fifth floor and it’s sort of in a newer part that was build behind an historic canal house. The location honestly couldn’t be better and I love that my front door is one of those typical historic Amsterdam entrances. The room itself is pretty spacious and I’ll be sharing a nice (clean) kitchen and bathroom with 3 others. I’ve only seen the room very briefly and I haven’t even met my housemates, so I can’t wait to get my keys on Tuesday and go there again.

Of course I’m super excited about decorating my room. All my furniture that I had in my room in Tilburg is now being used in my parent’s guesthouse, which means I get to pick all new (and secondhand) stuff. The vibe I want to go for is sort of industrial, but cosy with wood, black metal and a lot of pillows and blankets, with greys and dark greens.. if that makes sense. I’ve been spending hours getting inspiration on Pinterest, so check out my board, by clicking here, to see what I mean. I’m currently in the process of building my own platform bed (with the help of my dad of course) and we’ll also be making my tabletop ourselves. I love that I get to design and help build my own furniture, cause it means I can create exactly what I want and that it’ll be one of a kind. As I said I’ll get the keys on Tuesday and then I’ll be moving in on the weekend. I’m gonna try and share as much as possible on my insta stories, so make sure to follow me if you want to stay updated. I’m also definitely planning on doing a full room tour once it’s finished.

I really hope that everything I’ve planned for my room will come together nicely. I can’t wait to see how everything I’ve in my head turns out. Also, I’m just really excited to start my life in Amsterdam. This past year has been filled with some amazing adventures and now I’m ready for another completely different one. If you have any tips for fun places in Amsterdam or for room decor, please let me know in the comments or shoot me a message!
